Bologna Book Fair 2026: China and Poland Spotlight Cultural Storytelling and Innovation Ahead of Guest of Honour Spotlights

The 2026 Bologna Children's Book Fair (running through April 16) has emerged as a vibrant platform for global children's literature, with standout performances from China and Poland blending rich cultural heritage with forward-thinking publishing strategies.

China's Historic Milestone: Cai Gao Claims Hans Christian Andersen Award
The fair's biggest highlight is Cai Gao, the 80-year-old illustrator from Changsha, Hunan, who became the first Chinese artist to win the prestigious 2026 Hans Christian Andersen (HCA) Award – widely regarded as the "Nobel Prize" of children's literature. Unable to attend in person, Cai shared her "excitement, unbelievable honor and joy" from home, dedicating the award to her generation of creators.

Her publisher, Hunan Juvenile and Children's Publication House, has showcased Cai's classics like Bao'er – inspired by Qing Dynasty folk tales from Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio – through exhibitions and catalogues. Works by Xue Tao (The Falcon Flies, highlighting Manchu falconry and human-nature harmony), Tang Yongli (Song of Mulan in gongbi style), and ecological tales like King of the Milu Deer (now in Sinhala) and Dongfang Wawa (exported to Malaysia) underscore China's delegation of 18 publishers presenting over 1,200 titles.

Over 30 events on "Chinese IPs Going Global" drive copyright exports, reflecting a matured supply chain and cultural exchange, as noted by expert Chen Duanyi. Since China's 2018 Guest of Honour debut, the fair has amplified these traditions-rooted yet innovative stories.

The fair buzzes with stands featuring pandas, crested ibises, and legendary warriors, drawing international crowds.

Poland is leveraging 2026 as a "prelude programme" to its 2027 Guest of Honour role under the motif Polimagination, dispatching authors, illustrators, and leaders across children's and general publishing sectors.

Creative highlights include illustration showcases ("Tradition Reimagined" with Agata Dudek, Zosia Dzierżawska), comics ("Spotlight on Poland" featuring Przemek Truściński), global rights talks (Jadwiga Jędryas of Dwie Siostry), and interactive sketching sessions. Polimagination – designed by Rafał Kucharczuk – promises a bold 2027 showcase of Polish creativity.

Shared Themes: Heritage Meets Innovation
Both nations highlight traditional IPs reinvented for global audiences – China's folklore (Mulan, falcons) alongside Poland's visual narratives and comics – while engaging AI, rights, and literacy challenges. These preludes build international momentum, fostering copyright deals and cultural bridges at the world's premier children's book event since 1964.
